In the Field
Initially, I planned on painting something in Poulsbo, but after driving off the ferry, walking around the town, and getting lunch, it felt busier than I cared for. So we got some famous Sluys Pousbo Bakery pastries and continued driving south, scoping out a few spots with lovely views before settling on top of a hill in a park overlooking a quiet part of Gig Harbor.
One of my favorite parts of landscape painting is the details and complexity that come with water. The reflection, ripples, distortion—like nature's own impressionist painting.
The Painting
There were a lot of variables changing dramatically over the course of the few hours I spent painting; the wind had changed the ripples of the water, losing the reflection. The sun shifted, completly chaning the lighting and colors of the buildings. It was tough.
I focused more on the water, since that's an area I want to hone. And I do like how that part turned out.
The rest of it? Eh. I'll likely gesso over it and reuse the canvas for another study. As much as I want every piece I work on to be frame-worthy, that's just not going to happen.
